Website or Instagram: What Should Your Watamu Business Invest In First?
Both matter. But the order matters more. Here's the framework I use to decide what every coastal business should build first — and why.
This is the question I get asked most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on how your customers make the decision to buy from you. Not on which platform is trendier.
The framework
Ask one question: does a customer need to trust you before they hand over money, or does the sale happen on impulse? High-trust, higher-value purchases — a multi-night hotel stay, a tour package, an NGO donation — need a website, because a website is where credibility gets built: reviews, detail, proof. Impulse-driven, lower-friction purchases — a table at a beach club tonight, a quick errand — respond faster to social content because the decision happens in seconds, scrolling.
When to build a website first
- Your average transaction value is high (hotels, tour packages, NGOs seeking donors).
- Customers research before committing, often days or weeks in advance.
- You need to rank on Google for people actively searching, not just browsing social media.
When Instagram comes first
- Your product is visual and impulse-friendly (food, drinks, experiences).
- Repeat local customers matter as much as first-time tourists.
- You need momentum fast and can build the website in parallel.
Most businesses eventually need both. The framework just tells you which one earns its investment first.
